Grand Jury Opts Not To Indict Lawmaker's Husband

A state lawmaker's husband, who hitched someone else's utility trailer to the back of his pickup and drove it back to his house, insisted to police that he had no intention of stealing the equipment.

Columbia law enforcement officials said Stan Butt told them he was really just trying to buy the trailer.

Maury County District Attorney Brent Cooper said Butt's case was so unusual that he decided to leave it up to grand jurors to decide whether they thought the lawmaker's husband should be charged with a crime.

Cooper said the grand jury reported last week it decided not to file a charge against the husband of Representative Sheila Butt, a Republican who represents Columbia.

Stan Butt, a businessman and minister, did not respond to an email.
