Promoting Safety During Fire Prevention Month

If a fire started at your home or office, would you know how to put it out? October is fire prevention month. Koorsen Fire & Security demonstrates how extinguishing a fire safely begins with education.

Every year in the U.S., fires cause thousands of deaths and cost billions in property damage.

"A fire is gonna grow and spread quickly so obviously the quicker you can react, the better off we're going to be," said Grant Edwards with Koorsen Fire & Security.

Edwards said checking and maintaining fire safety systems, like smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, can help curb those numbers.

"In those checks, we're testing the components of the systems to make sure that they're gonna work properly in the event of an emergency," said Edwards.

Having the correct kind of fire extinguisher also plays a part.

There are four classes of fire extinguishers; A, B, C and D. Each class can put out a different type of fire.

"An A class fire is woods, plastics, cardboard. Your more typical hazards. B class fires are for flammable liquids. C is an electrically charged fire," he said.

Pick the wrong extinguisher and it could prolong the blaze or it may not extinguish it at all.
