State Representative Joe Armstrong resigned from office after serving the state for 28 years.

The Knoxville lawmaker had been charged with felony tax evasion.

He was likely to be expelled from the House during next week's special session to stop the state from losing $60 million dollars in highway funding because of a DUI law.

Armstrong sent his letter of resignation to Governor Haslam Friday afternoon.
