There was a heavy police presence outside an Antioch apartment complex after reports that 3-year-old child was accidentally shot in the foot.

Injuries were not life-threatening. The child was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The incident happened just before 10 a.m. Friday at the Chimney Top Apartments, south of the Bell Road interchange on Interstate 24.

Several squad cars were out front of the complex, including a van from the Metro Nashville Police Department crime unit.

Officials said a man and his wife were taking care of the child while his mother is in jail. They told police they heard gunshots and found that the child had shot himself in the bedroom of the apartment.

Investigators were speaking with residents at the complex, and yellow crime tape was up at one of the units.

Officers from the Youth Services Division were called out to investigate.

No charges had been filed yet, but police were still investigating.
