Lawmakers who oppose Governor Haslam's proposed gas tax, the Improve Act, spoke out, clarifying their position.

Representative Jerry Sexton and others said they

Sexton said everyone agrees we need more money for infrastructure projects, but he believed raising taxes isn't the way to do it.

"We believe that we should be able to fund our infrastructure with the monies that we have. Monies that we've already brought into our state government," said Sexton.

That money he's referencing is a $2 billion surplus in the state's budget.

Representative Sexton said those who oppose the Improve Act are calling Representative Beth Harwell to bring the measure back to the Transportation subcommittee for discussion or give it a clean slate.

So far, Harwell has not commented on the request.
