A Rutherford Co. School Resource Officer was fired after being charged with assault, perjury, filing a false report.
Sheriff Michael Fitzhugh said 53-year-old Jimmy Sanford, a 15-year veteran with the Sheriff's Office was fired over an arrest he made at Smyrna West Alternative School Monday.
According to Fitzhugh, Sanford handcuffed and then assaulted a 16-year-old male student before taking him to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center in Murfreesboro.
“We’re not going to accept lawlessness on the part of our law enforcement or detention officers,” Fitzhugh said. “It is unacceptable.”
Sanford was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. His bond was set at $6,000.
