An officer with the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center was fired after reportedly hitting a child with a belt.

The incident happened on September 26 when Shelly Sims entered a detainee’s room, removed her personal belt and used it to strike the child, according to report of action documents.

“I did in fact take off my duty belt and personal belt in the doorway of a detainees [sic] cell. I did not once touch the child,” Sims wrote.

She was subsequently fired on October 24. Additional details of the alleged incident were not immediately known.

Sims had numerous report of action letters filed against her, some dating back to 2015.
