Rutherford County Residents Fight High Density Development

For some, mowing a large yard is too much work but for Linda White it's exactly how she likes to spend her day. She and her husband bought into the rural lifestyle years ago after living in Chicago.

"It's the most wonderful stairs to heaven but I don't want nobody messing up my heaven," White said.

During the summer months Rutherfod County residents were informed more than 100 acres of land off of Yeargan Road would be annexed to the city, with the goal of developing a 300 plus home community called Magnolia Grove.

"We got a thing in the mail saying this is happening, there will be a public hearing," resident, Kevin Quillen explained.

After that public hearing all votes were delayed and the city asked the developer to meet with residents. "He got an earful," Quillen said.

Since then the community has signed a petition outlining their biggest concerns and asking city officials to compromise.

"It's not that we don't want them to grow, it's that we don't want so many," said White.

They'd like the developer and Murfreesboro city officials to consider going from 334 homes in 107 acres to 100, which would help this community transition into a less rural area. Albeit, rural is how they like it.

"We purchased out here for a reason and we don't want that taken away from us and we don't think it should be, doesn't make sense," resident, Kym Bradley said.

Residents plan to be at the next city hall meeting on October 12 where city officials are expected to vote on the annexation and high density plan.
