Nashville families came together for a solemn holiday tradition.
The annual Season to Remember event was held at the North Police Precinct. Family members who lost loved ones to homicide were able to make Christmas ornaments honoring their loved ones.
Some brought special photos, ribbons, and glitter to craft the special ornaments.
For many families, this is an annual event that helps them grieve.
“It helps me through the holiday season,” said Pretima Scruggs, who lost her son Tevin in 2011. “I usually do my ornament, and walk around and talk a little bit too.”
Participating families said they found comfort and support from others who have experienced the same heartbreak.
“It changes everything,” said Tony McPhee, who has been attending the event for 12 years. “You have to have that support to keep a sound mind.”
Yun Wang and his mother attended the event for the first time. His 74-year-old father was shot to death while taking out the trash last month.
“Knowing that other families are going through the same thing and we can talk, that is comforting,” said Wang. “It doesn’t make it easier but it is comforting.”
The ornaments will be hung on a tree Thursday, Dec. 14 at the 23rd annual Season to Remember Memorial Service. It will be held at the Children’s Garden at Centennial Park. Anyone who lost a loved one to violence can attend.
