U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander discussed his hopes for the state’s education system during a meeting with educators Belmont University.
Alexander explained the government's role in education during Monday’s meeting.
He said that since Congress and the President gave Tennessee control of its classrooms again last year, Tennessee will see better testing.
He added that repealing the Common Core in December has allowed for less testing, and when asked about the TNReady Tests, Alexander said that if the federal government had stayed out of state education, the delays would have never happened.
“Tennessee was doing just fine, and I think that Tennessee will do just fine in the future as soon as the state gets back on track. From now on, the federal government has zero to say about what the academic standard should be. That's a state decision,” said Senator Alexander.
He said he's going to be a big defender of classroom teachers and school directors and make sure the repeal of common core has been implemented correctly.
