NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Amid a debate over whether to rename military bases that honor Confederate figures, Republican U.S. Lamar Alexander says it's a “good idea” to review who is being honored with those kinds of designations.
On a call Tuesday, the Tennessee senator told reporters it's always appropriate to review the places and people who are honored to see if they are still appropriate in the context of current times and to ensure more recent heroes who deserve to be honored aren't being overlooked.
President Donald Trump has opposed renaming the facilities, while Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday didn’t endorse the idea, but said he wouldn’t oppose it.
