A high school softball referee was arrested after deputies learned he was a registered sex offender.

Herman Lee Brown was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office Tuesday after receiving a tip that Brown was a registered sex offender. He was then turned over to Robertson County officials.

Brown was a referee for high school girls’ softball games in Robertson and surrounding Counties.

As a registered sex offender, Brown is prohibited from entering school property as well as obtaining employment within 1,000 feet of a school.

Deputies found that Brown had allegedly been umpiring the games at schools in Robertson County as an official with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

Detectives confirmed one such incident by verifying payroll records. The investigation was still ongoing and additional charges were pending as other violations were being verified.

“We are grateful for the tip from a concerned citizen that led to this arrest,” said Sheriff Bill Holt. “It is important that we all work together to ensure the safety of our schools and our children.”

Brown was booked into the Robertson County Detention Facility.
