A special event at Bicentennial Mall kicked off National Crime Victims' Rights Week.
Federal and state officials attended the event Monday to honor victims by planting the park's eighth dogwood tree.
One of the speakers told those in attendance that the trees are much like those affected by crime strong, but unbreakable.
Department of Corrections District Director, Larhonda Williams, also spoke about the importance of providing support and hope for crime victims across the nation.
Not only are we honoring crime victims in Tennessee, crime victims are also being honored across the nation this week with a unified theme of Serving Victims, Building Trust, Restoring Hope, Williams said. ”The theme underscores the importance of early intervention and victim services in establishing trust with victims, which in turn begins to restore their hope for healing and recovery.”
A marker has been placed at the bottom of each dogwood tree, to remind visitors that they were planted in honor of crime victims.
Crime Victims’ Rights Week will last until April 16.
