Officials with the Kentucky State Police said they’re investigating a fatal trooper-involved shooting.
The incident happened around 2:48 p.m. Saturday in Hopkins County, Kentucky when a KSP Trooper was involved in a vehicle pursuit with an ATV. The pursuit ended on Dragline Road.
Authorities said the ATV driver, identified as 23-year-old Dylan R. Whitaker, lost control causing his ATV to overturn.
That’s when Whitaker brandished a handgun and fired shots at the trooper.
According to reports, the trooper then returned fire, striking Whitaker who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said the trooper was not injured.
An autopsy has been set for Monday at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Madisonville, Kentucky.
The investigation was ongoing. The trooper's identity was not released.
