COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio Governor John Kasich said a defiant clerk in Kentucky jailed for not issuing gay marriage licenses should follow the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling upholding same-sex marriage.
Kasich, a Republican running for president, said that while he believes in traditional marriage, the court has ruled and Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis should comply with that decision.
Kasich said Davis has been a government employee, not someone running a church.
Kasich, who has frequently spoken about his faith, also said he worries such battles will turn people off to what it means to be a Christian.
Mike Huckabee, a Baptist pastor also seeking the Republican nomination, has said Davis' jailing represents the criminalization of Christianity.
Other GOP candidates have also said Davis should follow the law.
