Chattanooga Police have shot and killed a man they said was threatening a small child and an officer who was trying to help the child.

A news release from the department said dispatchers received a call just before noon Saturday from someone "making unusual demands."

Responding officers found Javario Eagle armed and with a small child. Eagle entered and exited the house multiple times, refusing to follow police directions. At one point, he exited holding the child and brandishing a knife and firearm.

According to the release, the child was able to escape and was rescued by an officer. Police opened fire after they say Eagle "moved aggressively" toward the officer and child, brandishing the weapons.

Eagle died at a local hospital.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office has been investigating.
