Memphis Shows Progress In Reducing Airfares

Posted

Memphis International Airport officials have been reporting progress in reducing historically high airfares.

Airport officials told The Commercial Appeal that Department of Transportation data showed the average airfare at Memphis has come down more than $93 since 2012. That dropped the Memphis airport to 30th most expensive among the top 100 airports in the latest government tally.

A DOT report pegged average round-trip fare from Memphis at $418.70 in the second quarter of 2015, compared to $511.93 in 2012. Officials said the average has fallen steadily over four years, reflecting efforts to recruit low-cost carriers to the airport.

High airfares associated with major airline hubs have been a historical lament for Memphis travelers, driving them to shop for lower fares in nearby cities including Little Rock and Nashville.
