Students at Stratford High School said goodbye to a former classmate who was gunned down at James Cayce Homes.
Students released balloons in memory of 19-year-old Vastoria Lucas.
Lucas was a Stratford High School student who was shot and killed Tuesday evening around 5:30 on South 8th Street in the public housing development.
Her mother told us she made good grades and loved playing basketball for Stratford High. She also believes Lucas' death was premeditated.
The students of Stratford directly addressed state and city leaders, calling for a change.
"Governor Bill Haslam, a change just has to come. We've gotta stop losing our friends. I've lost too many friends. Parents shouldn't have to bury their children the way they bury their children, at all," one student said.
Metro Police officers arrested 28-year-old Kevin Smith and charged him with criminal homicide in Lucas' death. Police said Smith admitted to shooting Lucas.
