NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Hundreds of agricultural experts and farmers spent the day at Tennessee State University.

It was the school’s Small Farms Expo. The event had farm demonstrations and tours for area high school students.

There were also displays of new research projects and experiments and new farm equipment.

They also learned more about the importance of winter canola.

“It’s a winter annual crop, so it can be grown so that it reduces soil erosion in the winter time if a farmer is leaving their field fallow or something like that,” said Jason De Koff, a TSU Assistant Professor. “One of the other things that we like to talk about with the demonstration we have is how you can take the seed that you harvest and convert it into biodiesel.”

Farmers who have produced their own biodiesel can make it for $2.50 to $3 a gallon, and experts said those prices have been more stable than fossil fuels.
