SUMMERTOWN, Tenn. – A Summertown man has been arrested in connection with the death of his former girlfriend.

Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said 23-year-old Shane Vernon Shirley has been accused of killing 25-year-old Britney Nicole Pigg.

He was arrested Thursday morning and charged with criminal homicide in the case.

Agents said Pigg’s body was discovered after she missed a scheduled paternity hearing involving Shirley in Lawrence County. Her body was later found inside her car on property belonging to Shirley’s uncle.

Her six-month-old child was found unharmed at the home of an acquaintance of Shirley’s current girlfriend.

According to investigators, Pigg met Shirley at his home the night before the paternity hearing. They believe he was responsible for her death.

It was not known how she died.

Shirley was booked into the Lewis County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond.

The incident remains under investigation.
