Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation responded to an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect injured.
The incident began on Interstate 65 North near exit 112 in Robertson County near Cross Plains shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
According to initial reports, a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper, later identified as Trooper Tyler Oliphant, was using his radar in the median of the interstate. He saw an SUV driving at a high rate of speed, headed north, and he attempted to make a traffic stop.
The vehicle then got off at Exit 112, ran a stop sign, and made a sharp left turn onto Highway 25.
When the SUV turned, it hit a tractor trailer and went down an embankment.
Trooper Oliphant got to the scene, and the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Montreal Lamont Batey, allegedly got out of the SUV and pulled a gun on the trooper.
Authorities said that during this exchange Trooper Oliphant fired. The driver was hit and flown by helicopter to a Nashville hospital. His condition had not yet been released.
Reports confirmed Trooper Oliphant was not injured. Officials recovered a firearm near Batey's vehicle.
The investigation remained ongoing.
