NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Scammers have found another way to take advantage of the pandemic to try to get your personal information.

The Tennessee Department of Health said scammers have hijacked its phone number, using it to call people in an attempt to trick them into giving out their personal information.

The department said there are ways you can easily tell it's not actually them.

First, the health department will never leave messages about your personal health information. Second, they will never ask anyone financial or insurance-related questions. Finally, the department is warning the public not to give any personal information out to a stranger over the phone.

The FCC also recommends you don't answer any unknown calls, and if you do - hang up right away.

If you feel you have been a victim of this scam, call the Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-342-8385 or 615-741-4737.
