NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced plans to suspend most of its construction related lane closures over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
TDOT officials said Monday most lanes, closed due to road work, would reopen beginning at midnight Thursday through 6 a.m. Monday. The hope is to provide “maximum roadway capacity for holiday travelers.”
“We always anticipate heavier than normal traffic on Tennessee’s interstates and state routes during the July 4th holiday,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “We will be suspending lane closures for this holiday travel period to help travelers reach their destinations safely and without unnecessary delays.”
Travelers can still expect a few long term lane closures, as well as workers being on site in construction zones. Reduced speed limits in work zones would remain in effect.
A projection from AAA estimates some 41.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this holiday weekend.
