NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A judge decided the teenager accused of shooting a 10-year-old in the chest inside a Nashville motel room will be kept in custody for the time being.

The incident happened shortly after midnight Saturday, inside a room of the Regency Inn on Hampton Street.

The 14-year-old suspect appeared in court Monday afternoon on charges of aggravated assault and unlawful gun possession.

The judge said it appeared there was no malicious intent, but ruled to keep the teen in custody because of the reckless nature of the shooting.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said the victim was playing with a toy cap gun and pointed it at other boys in the room. The 14-year-old suspect apparently had a .22 caliber gun that was in poor condition and pointed it at the victim.

Police said the teen pulled the trigger, causing it to discharge. The victim was shot in the chest and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was listed in stable condition.

A female young adult was in the motel room taking a bath at the time and did not see the shooting.

The teen, who apparently lives not far from the hotel, was apprehended nearby. None of the identities were released.
