A teen who accidentally shot himself has been charged with theft and being a felon in possession of a handgun.

The teen, identified as convicted felon 18-year-old Kentrell Walton, was the front seat passenger in a car driven by 18-year-old Jacques Odom when they left a McDonald’s parking lot in the 1100 block of Murfreesboro Pike around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. That's when Walton accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Reports stated Odom drove Walton to the hospital for treatment.

An investigation revealed three handguns inside Odom’s vehicle.

According to police, the weapons had been reported stolen from a Rutherford County gun store, and Walton admitted one of the guns was his.

Walton had previously been convicted for aggravated burglary and theft of a vehicle. He has now been charged with theft and being a felon in possession of a handgun. He was being held in lieu of a $5,000 bond.

Odom and a backseat passenger, identified as 18-year-old Corieon King, were issued citations for theft. They were both released.
