Teen Killed While Protecting Friends

Posted

A high school football player in Knoxville was killed trying to protect his friends.

The shooting happened Thursday night. Police said 15-year-old Zaevion Dobson was sitting with friends on a porch when a group of men opened fire.

He used his body to block three girls.

Friday night, students held a vigil for Zaevion.

Those who knew him said they weren't surprised he saved others.

"Hard worker,” said Rob Black, of Fulton High School. “Guy that just loved life, loved the game. Loved his peers and a kid of great character."

Police said the shooting was tied to gang violence.

Earlier, gang members shot at the home of 23-year-old Brandon Perry, injuring his mother.

He and a group of men went looking for revenge.

Police said they randomly opened fire on the teenagers, who had nothing to do with the conflict.
