NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 20-year-old man accused of theft was arrested after he jumped into the Cumberland River in an alleged attempt to get away from police.
The incident happened shortly after 1 a.m. Monday at Riverfront Park.
Officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department said they witnessed a man, identified as David Hadaway, III, steal something and tried to stop him.
At that point, he ran onto a boat and jumped into the river, where he tried to swim to Nissan Stadium.
Crews with the Office of Emergency Management responded and began searching the water by boat. Officers kept an eye on him as he swam to the east bank of the river.
Police helped Hadaway out of the water and took him into custody.
He was charged with theft, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, trespassing and evading arrest.
