Laptops and security cameras were stolen from a secure government office in Rutherford County.
Thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of electronics including laptop computers from the Rutherford County Office Building on W. Lyttle Street. The surveillance video from the time of the incident was also taken.
"They had to come in through this locked door and then come over to this cabinet," said Rutherford county Property Assessor Rob Mitchell who added the thief took two laptop computers. "They were the newest and most expensive," said Mitchell.
Mitchell added that thankfully, "There's not sensitive personal data stored on there...that's only on the server."
The thief also hit the Register of Deeds office.
"Together this piece of equipment is about $20,000 piece. The cameras are gone. They stole both cameras," said Register of Deeds Heather Dawbarn.
The one camera the thief did not steal is in the lobby - a security cam that should have caught the crook in act, but that video has disappeared.
"Yes, there's a gap in the video," said Dawbarn. "All of a sudden you have thefts and 17 hours of video is missing? Correct," she said.
Police believed whoever pulled off the heist was well-organized, very careful and knew exactly what they wanted to take.
In all, the burglar made off with more than $10,000 in electronics and disappeared leaving no evidence behind.
This was not the first time thieves hit the office building. Last year, around the same time of year, several items were also stolen from the Register of Deeds office.
