NASHVILLE, Tenn (WTVF) — Many In Nashville are feeling the lasting impacts of a tornado, COVID-19 and racial injustices. It's been a tough year for many in Nashville, especially for those in the black community.

"Anything that’s added to that oppression right there just makes things worse for us," said Hambino Godbody with Gideon's Army.

Godbody is an organizer with Gideon’s Army, a social justice organization designed to help black people on the road to success.

The March tornado ripped through homes and businesses. COVID-19 shined a light on the racial disparities in the health system and the protests have heightened the racial injustices many people of color say they’re facing.

"All we got to do is look at our history and we’ve been through many trials and many tribulations," said Godbody.

Gideon’s Army says it’s about giving people the tools to climb through these dark days and organizers are working together to help the community pull through these hard times.

"No matter how hard they may seen, no matter how disastrous they might have been we away so overcome because we’re resilient people," said Godbody.

Godbody says he tells people not to focus on the negatives but instead the positives.

He says back to back disasters in the black community is hard but they’re focusing on the achievements.
