A memorial was created for Sam the Turkey, a wild turkey whose ability to cause trouble had become known and loved by community members.
Sam was named for the road he often walked, Sam Ridley Parkway. Unfortunately, Sam was hit and killed by a vehicle on the road Monday.
City officials took time to remember his special qualities in a tweet.
It's been reported that our friendly (and brave) Sam Ridley Parkway turkey, Sam, has finally met his fate. Sam - You've been the talk of the town for a while now. We will miss how you were able to slow down traffic and take our minds off the troubles of the day. pic.twitter.com/tLjUcIF0Bo

But community member went even further.
Connie Sue Mozingo with the group "Smyrna Wildlife Awareness in Memory of "Sam the Turkey"" held a candlelight vigil that night and erected a memorial in his honor.
The group is "devoted to make others aware of our precious Sam Ridley mascot and all wildlife."
