Tennessee State University has paved the way for other historically black colleges and universities after being the first to win a prestigious award.
TSU won the Andrew Heiskell award for its success in internationalizing its campus, and its study abroad program.
Since its international education department was established back in 2012, it has grown from 79 international students to 900 students on campus.
Also, 121 students have studied outside the U.S. jumping from just 36 students in its first year - all thanks to word of mouth and a strong desire to expose students to more opportunities.
“Part of our university’s mission is to present global leaders how can you be a global leader if you don’t have a global perspective if you can’t understand the thinking that’s outside our U.S. centric thinking,” said Mark Brinkley, with the TSU Diversity and International Affairs.
