NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Three children and two adults were rushed to local hospitals after a house fire in North Nashville early Friday morning, according to the Nashville Fire Department.
The fire started at about 12:45 a.m. Friday at a home on 12th Avenue North.
According to a fire captain at the scene, crews arrived to find heavy flames shooting out of the back of the house, and up from the second story.
"Oh my gosh, what's going on, I hope everybody got out safely and hope everyone is okay," said Shayla, a neighbor.
Shayla said she noticed the children outside and went to comfort them.
"The fire department everybody was out, and the kids were out, so I went in and got some blankets and covered the kids up and just consoled them," Shayla said, "They were sad, so I was just holding the baby rocking her and just trying to calm them down."
Three children, two under the age of 9 and a 15-year-old, and two adults were rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. The fire department said one adult is in critical condition with injuries, including burns. The other suffered severe lacerations while attempting to break windows and rescue family members.
A neighbor told NewsChannel 5 he sleeps with his windows open and awoke Friday morning to hear someone screaming, "Get down! Get down!" He said he saw flames shooting from the kitchen windows of his neighbor's home.
