CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Volkswagen facility in Chattanooga will soon begin building electric vehicles.

Volkswagen made the announcement Monday morning, saying the plant will be the North American hub for assembling electric vehicles and will create an estimated 1,000 American jobs. Production is set to begin in 2022.

According to a release from Sen. Marsha Blackburn's office, the company will invest $800 million into the facility.

On Sunday, General Motors announced it would produce the new Cadillac XT6 crossover in Spring Hill.

"Volkswagen and General Motors’ decisions are further proof that Tennessee workers and our business friendly climate create a great place for jobs growth," said Sen. Blackburn said in a release. "These decisions will each benefit their respective regions tremendously. Volkswagen and GM are to be commended for choosing Tennessee and we look forward to seeing the increase in production."

Senator Lamar Alexander also released a statement regarding the new VW manufacturing facility in Chattanooga: "“I’ve thought for a while that the TVA region could be a national leader in manufacturing electric cars." He went on to day that the announcement by Volkswagen "will create 1,000 new, good-paying jobs for Tennesseans and is yet another success story for our state’s auto industry."
