To recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month, Franklin police and other Williamson County organizations held a candlelight gathering at the police headquarters in Franklin.
One of the organizations involved in Friday’s event said education is the key to taking care of our kids.
"It's extremely important to educate the community. National statistics indicate that one in ten children will be sexually abused by the time they reach 18. That's a significant number of children. We have to educate the community so that we can all be responsible for better protecting our children,” said Marcus Stamps.
It's a sobering statistic: more than three million children are affected by child abuse and neglect.
Last year, the Davis House Child Advocacy Center in Franklin served 300 physically or sexually abused children in Williamson County.
