The curtains have been rolled back at the Belcourt Theatre as crews work to preserve the historic landmark.

On Friday NewsChannel5 was given a tour of the construction area after the film screen was taken down.

The chairs have been rolled away temporarily and they will be put back inside once new flooring is installed

Stephanie Silverman said, "The walls are empty the curtains are out, and we're ready to really dig in."

Stephanie Silverman is the executive director of the theatre. She looked on as crews tore the lobby floor to pieces.

Silverman said, "A lot of things for people when they come into the building will seem really familiar and then there will be other things that will feel brand new like the lobby and certainly the restrooms."

This is the Belcourt Theatre's first major construction work in about 50 years.

In addition to renovating the lobby area, they are adding a 45 seat screening area upstairs as well as a classroom.

They hope to have the updates finished around June or July.
