There's a special training session to help hair stylists recognize the signs of domestic violence.
One in four women in the U.S. are victims of domestic violence. Sometimes they don't reach out to their friends or family. Instead, it's their hairdressers who hear about the abuse.
Now, the YWCA is calling all stylists to prepare for these conversations with an upcoming training session.
They’ve called it "Shear Haven" and it's a new initiative that equips stylists with the knowledge and resources to recognize the signs of domestic violence – and successfully navigate conversations with their clients who may be in danger.
“I was a victim of domestic violence in the past,” said Susanne Post, owner of Shine the Salon. “I was actually fortunate to have someone like that in my life. I had an amazing therapist who said the words 'this is not a normal relationship. You're in an abusive relationship.'”
Now, she's hoping to pass along the tools that can help others get to safety.
The training is Monday, October 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lentz Public Health Center. Click here for more information.
