NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Gary Smith has been named head coach of Nashville’s Major League Soccer team.

Smith is the current head coach of Nashville Soccer Club and will transition with the club to MLS in 2020. He won an MLS Cup Title in 2010 with the Colorado Rapids.

“I am grateful to John Ingram, Ian Ayre, and the rest of our ownership for their faith in me to lead this club on the field as we join Major League Soccer,” said Smith. “I look forward to continuing to work with Mike Jacobs as we build our MLS squad for next season. I love the community, the fans and the excitement around soccer in Nashville, and I am delighted that this city will continue to be my home for the coming years.”

Smith, of Harlow, England, began his professional career with clubs like Fulham FC, Colchester United FC and Wycombe Wanderers FC.

Smith has been in Nashville since April of 2017 when he was hired to coach at the USL Championship level.
