Monsoon storms in the Desert Southwest have begun

Every summer, places in the United States Desert Southwest receive an extra bit of rain.

Similar to certain parts of the U.S. that experience the seasons — spring, summer, fall and winter. This region experiences a wet or rainy season called the monsoon.

In a region that receives an average of less than 12 inches of rain a year, and at least a third of that falls over the course of a few months.

All of that rain in a short period of time can lead to flooding problems.

The season typically lasts until mid to late September.
