Two people were killed and several others were injured in a crash on Interstate 40 that closed part of the roadway in Wilson County.
Officials said the wreck happened around 10:29 p.m. Saturday in the westbound lanes of the interstate between mile markers 238 and 239 near Lebanon.
Those with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Rebecka T. Lustre was traveling west when it lost control and swerved multiple times before rolling over and landing on its top in the middle of the road.
Two people, identified as 32-year-old Jessica V. Taylor and 28-year-old Jonathan W. Lustre, were killed in the crash. Authorities confirmed they were not wearing seatbelts.
The driver and four other passengers were injured in the crash, and officials said they were wearing seatbelts. Those four passengers were identified as 25-year-old Scott A. Isringhausen, 30-year-old Patrick W. Hasting, 32-year-old Martha J. Rogers, and 24-year-old Nathaniel S. Sisk.
LifeFlight was called in to help. THP officials were on the scene investigating for several hours overnight into Sunday morning.
Tennessee Department of Transportation officials said the roadway was closed to westbound traffic during the investigation. Eastbound drivers were not affected.
Authorities confirmed criminal charges were pending. They added seatbelts would have made a difference in the crash.
