NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A coalition of ten organizations has asked Metro's School Board to extend the search process for the new Director of Schools.
In a letter they said, "our organizations feel that your search firm has not yet provided a slate of four candidates that all meet the qualifications of the position, including experience with large school districts and school turnarounds."
The letter was signed by representatives of the following ten organizations:
- Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship
- Metropolitan Nashville Education Association
- NAACP
- Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce
- Nashville Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
- Nashville Organized for Action & Hope
- Service Employees International Union
- Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition
- Urban Housing Solutions
- Urban League of Middle Tennessee
They also asked the board to heed the Chamber Report Card's recommendations to wait to make a final decision until after the Mayoral election.
In addition, the organizations also said the time would allow the board to address "deep internal divisions."
The letter concluded with the following statement:
“We hope the diversity of our organizations underscores the fact that our suggestions are not a reaction to any one faction or individual on the board. We support you leading the entire board in taking the necessary time to conduct a director search of which our entire city and our children can be proud.”
