NASHVILLE, Tenn. – 911 tapes capture the fear in 16-year-old Brooke’s voice as two men tried to break in her home on Hill Road in South Davidson County.
“There's two men outside my house I think they're trying to break in. Me and my sister are home alone,” she said to a 911 dispatcher Monday morning.
It was a call Brooke and her 13-year-old sister Maggie never expected to make. Their parents were at work when they heard banging on their back door. Brooke said she saw a white man she didn’t know in the back yard and a Hispanic man standing out front.
That's when she called 911.
“I didn't know if they were armed, if they had guns or if they were you know dangerous,” she said.
She said she held it together as the big sister, rushing Maggie to their parents’ bathroom where the cabinets were a favorite hiding spot when they were younger.
“I had shut her in. I said ‘you just stay in here I'm gonna be right here.’ So she said ‘no there’s room for both of us’ so we both got in and shut the cabinet doors,” she said.
“If they do get in don't make any noise I want you to be quiet , don't hang up the phone,” the dispatcher instructed Brooke during the call.
On several occasions you can hear Brooke whisper “please hurry.”
Within minutes the men made their way inside.
“They’re getting closer,” Brooke whispered to dispatch..
Police later found household items like guitars, a t.v. and a shotgun on the suspects. They are items the family confirmed belonged to them.
13-year-old Maggie said as the men got closer to their hiding spot she felt numb with fear.
“You’re just in a state of shock and fear and ‘are they gonna do something to me? Are they gonna hurt me?’” she said.
At one point one of the men came into their room, even opening some of the cabinets.
“I think they did open the top ones and saw that they were empty so they didn't bother to look in the bottom ones,” Brooke said.
Police arrive after eight minutes and after 17 minutes you can hear Brooke and Maggie shouting from their hiding spot.
“We’re back here!” they said.
Police are applauding the girls and Maggie said she's thankful for her big sister.
“How she reacted to this, I hope I can be like that when I'm older,” she said.
The family is just glad the girls are safe and that the suspects are in custody. They say they don’t know the suspects.
Police say they grabbed 29-year-old Carols Murillo as he ran from the property. They say 31-year-old Brian Tomberlind drove off and ran into the woods before a police dog tracked him down.
Both men are facing aggravated burglary and possession of burglary tools charges.
Tomberlind is also facing charges for evading arrest and driving on a revoked license.
Before heading to jail he's being treated at the hospital for drugs police say he took before the burglary.
