NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Summer months mean more bugs and insects around your home. In Nashville, brown recluse spiders have also become a problem for many homeowner.
Ron Schwalb and Terry Bagsby with U.S. Pest Protection were called Monday to help yet another house. It was the homeowners’ second treatment.
“They get in places where you don’t have a lot of human contact so storage places crawl spaces attics,” said Ron Schwalb.
If you don’t have an exterminating service, you can buy monitoring traps, which can be found at local hardware stores, and set them behind your furniture, like a couch.
“When they move around at night, they get caught in these traps then you can look at the trap see if it might be a brown recluse or some other kind of spider, then take it to a pest professional office and have it identified,” said Schwalb.
They're not aggressive, but they can bite.
“It’s generally when people put on clothes that may have been sitting on the floor for a long time or shoes or rollover on the bed. They don’t come after people,” added Schwalb.
So experts said do your part by decluttering your home and wear long sleeves and gloves when doing so just in case you have a problem of which you’re unaware.
Symptoms of brown recluse spider bites include reddened skin, mild pain or itching. If you experience more severe symptoms like vomiting, fever and chills or an open sore, you should call your doctor.
