NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The twin newborns didn't stand a chance. Their mother, Lindsey Lowe murdered them seconds after delivery.

Lowe was convicted and sentenced to life, but wants a new trial. Against this backdrop the father of those infants is finally speaking out.

In an exclusive interview Jeremy Smith shared intimate details about his relationship with Lowe and his struggle to understand her crime.

"Do you think justice was done?" asked NewsChannel 5's Nick Beres.

"She should have to be behind bars the rest of her life and suffer just like she made those kids suffer," said Smith.

Even now, four years later,he struggles.

Word of what happened came to him out of the blue.

"Did you know she was pregnant?" asked Beres.

"No, never," said Smith.

Detectives told Smith his infants were gone. Now for the first time he's talking about the tragedy and his relationship with Lowe.

"Just friends and then friends who ended up having sex," said Smith.

To this day Smith remains angry that date rape was mentioned during Lowe's trial. It's an allegation that was never proven.

"Who wouldn't get upset after being suggested I forced myself on her," said Smith.

He said he met Lowe during a trip to Old Hickory Lake.

"We both pursued each other. As adults we knew what we were doing," said Smith.

Over time they became intimate on three separate occasions.

"And then all of sudden everything stopped. We just stopped talking, texting and everything," said Smith.

He knew Lowe was engaged to be married and figured she simply decided to end their affair. But then months later Smith received a horrible call from a Hendersonville detective.

Lowe had given birth and was charged with killing both babies. Their bodies were found in a laundry basket.

"They had no chance at life whatsoever because of her hands," said Smith.

DNA confirmed Smith was the father. He still can't understand why she did what she did.

"Never, people ask me what was wrong with her. Nothing. College degree, normal family. Normal as normal gets," said Smith.

At her sentencing in 2013 Lowe took the stand.

"I cannot explain why I put my babies in a laundry basket. Nor can I articulate what was going through my mind at the time. I can only say I'm sorry," Lowe testified at the time.

It's an apology Smith said he can never accept.

He gladly would have taken twins and raised them himself.

"I want to let everyone know that she had options and didn't make the right options or the right choices. She killed two innocent children," said Smith.

Lindsey Lowe is serving a life sentence but will be eligible for parole in the year 2064 when she'll be 77-years-old.

The motion a new trial will go before the appellate court next month.
