NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Ana Granados said the pain is just as strong today as it was nearly eight years ago when she lost her seven-week-old son, Mario Granados.

The infant was killed while under the care of 34-year-old Marison Alvarado, his aunt, who escaped to Mexico to avoid prosecution after police determined he died while under her care.

Baby Mario was admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center on July 16, 2007 with a broken leg, fractured ribs and a severe head injury.

Granados learned of her baby's injuries while being detained on a felony marijuana charge.

"I was in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Granados.

Granados said she had never been in trouble before, never been in jail and had never been arrested. Her parents had a difficult time paying her bond, which kept her in jail for two months.

She said she was supposed to be released two days prior to her baby's death.

"I don't know why it took them so long to release me, my bond had already been paid,” she said.

Granados said a social worker told her of her baby's condition a day after he had been admitted to the hospital.

“They told me they needed to get a special release for me to go see my baby, but it took them three days to finally let me see him,” she added.

Granados said baby Mario never woke up at the hospital and ended up dying. She confronted Alvarado at her house.

"I asked her why she did it, she said he was crying, she lost her temper and hit him,” she said.

Granados went to police the following day but was told there was nothing they could do. The next day, Alvarado fled and eight years later was finally apprehended.

Last week FBI agents flew Alvarado from Mexico to Texas and then to Nashville, and turned her over to Metro Police.

"I'm a good mother, I'm a good friend, I'm a good wife. I can't go anywhere without my children now, it's hard for me to trust anyone.”
