NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Nashville man who survived the Pearl Harbor bombing while serving aboard the USS Tennessee has been laid to rest.
World War II veteran George Westover spoke to WPLN-FM in February.
He said his time in Hawaii was relaxing until Dec. 7, 1941. He had his swim trunks and was just going to take a sun bath when he started to see bombing.
As gun director, Westover bolted to the top the mast where he clearly saw the destruction that surrounded him.
The Tennessee lost five men that day and its stern melted from the inferno.
Westover retired from the military in 1962, eventually settling in Tennessee.
He died June 30 at age 96. He was buried Friday at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
