NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A smart phone app was able to help police track a suspect accused  of stealing a woman's purse while she loaded groceries into her car.

Officials with Metro Police said the victim was in the parking lot of the Kroger on Old Hickory Boulevard Sunday evening when the suspect, identified as David Smith, pulled up in an SUV.

"I was in the first handicapped spot and he just rolled around the corner and I saw him coming up real close and I knew, I knew he was going for my purse," said Melanie Mundy.

Mundy said Smith reached through the window and grabbed the purse which was on back of the shopping cart. She said her first instinct was to grab the purse, at which point Smith reportedly accelerated.

Mundy said she held on to it for as long as she could. The thief dragged her for awhile before she was forced to let go.

"When I fell I kind of skidded on my arm and my face, I've got bruises on the side of my face," Mundy explained.

She suffered injuries to her head, along with a broken arm.

Detectives were able to track Smith to the Avalon Apartments in Hermitage by using the app, Find My iPhone. Smith was identified as a suspect and taken into custody.

The victim’s phone was also recovered. So far police have not been able to recover her purse.

Smith was said to be facing charges of aggravated robbery and assault.
