NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 17-year-old suspect was injured after he was shot by a man he allegedly tried to rob.

The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday on Lafayette Street in Nashville.

Officials with Metro Police said 74-year-old Larry Claybaker was sitting in his car when he was approached by two suspects, described as African American teens.

The two opened the car door and demanded that he get out of the vehicle. As they moved closer to him, Claybaker pulled a handgun from his pocket and shot one of the suspects.

One was struck in the abdomen, while the other was able to flee on foot with the victim's cellphone.

Claybaker was able to hold the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived on the scene.

The teen was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police said he would be charged with robbery at Juvenile Court upon his release from the hospital.

Claybaker had a valid handgun carry permit. No charges were filed against him.

A description of the other suspect was not known. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
