NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — With Thanksgiving just days away, the Nashville Humane Association (NHA) is encouraging families to open their homes to a furry friend as part of their "Home for the Paw-lidays" initiative.
The idea behind the foster program is to get dogs out of the shelter and into a loving home for the week of Thanksgiving. NHA is asking people to come pick up adoptable dogs Monday and keep them until Saturday morning. They'll provide everything the dogs will need for the week including food, dog bowls, a crate and toys.
NHA director of media relations Kenneth Tallier says fostering helps them figure out a dog's true personality.
"It’s an amazing program because it does get the animal out of the shelter. It gets them in a home environment," Tallier said. "We don’t know their full history, so we know what we just see in the shelter, but to find out what they’re like in a home environment--it really does help them find their forever home."
Dogs can be picked up for the week of fostering as soon as NHA opens at 10 a.m. Monday. Interested families can also email foster@nashvillehumane.org to be paired with their perfect match.
If after the week the foster family can't bear to give their dog up, they will be first in line for the opportunity to adopt the dog.
