The man was driving a Honda Accord on I-24 East when it crashed while trying to pass a tractor-trailer, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation.
When it tried to pass the tractor-trailer on the right shoulder, the car reportedly entered its path of travel causing the truck to hit the Honda.
The car rolled several times and stopped on the left shoulder. The man was transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Medical Center where he later died. His passenger was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition. Officials are still making attempts to I.D. the driver.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
