1 Killed In Crash On SR 840 Near Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – One person has died following a crash involving multiple vehicles on State Route 840 in Rutherford County. 

The incident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, at mile marker 53 near Interstate 24.

Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said at least one person has died.

According to authorities, the victim, identified as 69-year-old James L. Caughorn, made a sharp left turn toward the median and entered oncoming traffic. He was hit in the driver's side by a semi. Officials said they do not know why Caughorn made the turn.

Officials identified the driver of the semi as 68-year-old Gus Henry Thiele, Jr. They added Thiele was unable to avoid hitting Caughorn. Thiele was not injured.

Authorities said they do not suspect drug or alcohol use. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Crews said the left lane of westbound State Route 840 was blocked as a result of the wreck. The road was reopen shortly after 2 p.m.
